Red January 2020

If you’ve been following my Instagram, you’ll be sick of hearing about my #redjanuary2020 antics, but here is a round up of what I found out during the 31 day active challenge.

If you wouldn’t mind… please bung a couple of quid to Mind mental health charity

January is long.

Not much to add to that, you all know what that means.

I’m just a touch healthier this year.

Interestingly, this year of doing Red January showed me how I have benefited from my slightly healthier lifestyle. When I did it a few years ago, I wasn’t as fit and spent most of the month with a cold. This year, I noticed that it wasn’t until the 29th that I really got bowled over by a winter bug, which I put down to a lifestyle of generally eating more vegetables and exercising more. It was the Dominoes Pizza that knocked me out in the end though.

It’s really hard to make yourself do something active when you are feeling low.

On some days, I felt a bit blah and after a walk with my invisible dog with a flashing pink collar, I totally snapped out of my funk and got on with my evening. I often find a long walk with no distractions of music/ candy crush helps me to find answers and inspiration. However, there were a couple of days where it was a straight no. I am sure it would have helped to force myself into some exercise, but my brain and body combined to say, lie down and feel shite. Thankfully, this was only a couple of days out of the 31.

It is so hard to get your exercise in when you work.

Molly and I spent a lot of time walking in the dark.

My step count on days when I’m at work is less than half what I normally do, even when I try to stay standing as much as possible. I can really understand why many people struggle to make any kind of health changes when they work all week. I work part time, so I manage to find a balance. After a day at work and an hour round trip of travelling each day, all I could manage regularly was a walk with the dog after dinner. It was very rare that I hit 10,000 steps on a work day. Trying to eat something nourishing, then wrangling the child into bed takes up most of my evening. If you are the excuse police, yes, I could have gone to the gym at 9pm. But let’s face it, no. I’m not going to do that.

Red January accountability photos on Insta get boring pretty quickly.

Yeah, sorry for all those screen shots of my fitbit data.
